Our Natural Standard
Consumers have different ideas about what natural means. We want to share what natural means to us, so you can be a more fully informed consumer. We use the word natural when our product contains only ingredients that meet our natural standard.
What is our natural standard?
We believe that an ingredient is natural if it exists in nature without human interference and has been extracted or produced biologically from natural sources. Our natural ingredients are processed to assure consistency of taste, stability and safety. We believe the amount of processing that an ingredient undergoes does not change whether an ingredient may be called natural. We ensure the ingredients and flavors we use in our products meet our natural standard.
Depending upon the ingredient, our suppliers may use food grade FDA-approved aids to process the ingredient, but none of these processing aids remain in the final ingredient at detectable levels. Under U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations, these processing aids are not subject to labeling requirements because they have no technical or functional effect in the finished food. For certain ingredients, our suppliers use proteins called enzymes or yeast to convert plant material into the ingredients through biological processes. These biological processes occur in nature, but they may not be identical to the way in which a particular ingredient is created in nature.
We purchase all of our ingredients from suppliers. As part of our supplier selection process, we investigate how the ingredients are produced to ensure that the ingredient meets our natural standard. We use information provided by our suppliers and general industry information.
